UnJamaican

peom from jamaica, jamaican writers

I, too, am Jamaican.

I sit in the backyard
When company comes,
I am the darker sister
But I laugh,
And eat of the trees of the garden,
And grow strong.

Tomorrow,
I’ll eat at the table
When company comes.
Nobody’ll dare
Send me to the backyard
Then.
I grow strong and
I grow fat

I too am Jamaican

Besides, I am now fifty
I gorge at the buffet before
The children come and
Laugh at their tears.
They cannot stop me now
I have grown too strong

I too am Jamaican
