Jamaica Welcomes Rwanda Defence Force Engineer Contingent

Jamaica has formally welcomed a Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) Engineer Contingent assigned to assist with restoring infrastructure damaged by hurricane Melissa.
The official reception took place at the Caribbean Military Academy Headquarters in Kingston on Thursday.
Oversight of the ceremony was provided by Jamaica’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith.
During her address to the contingent, Senator Johnson Smith conveyed gratitude to the Government of Rwanda, President Paul Kagame, and the Rwandan people for dispatching the engineering team.
Acknowledgement was given to the technical expertise of the RDF engineers, which is expected to play a meaningful role in Jamaica’s recovery and resilience-building efforts following the disaster.
Representation of the Rwanda Defence Force leadership was led by Colonel Claudien Bizimungu, who spoke in solidarity with the Government and people of Jamaica.
A message from the RDF leadership was delivered by Col Bizimungu, reaffirming Rwanda’s commitment to support Jamaica throughout its rebuilding phase.
Emphasis was placed on the deployment as part of Rwanda’s wider dedication to international cooperation and humanitarian assistance.
Reference was also made to the RDF’s experience in engineering operations, reconstruction projects, and community-focused initiatives.
Coordination on the ground will be led by Col Moses Kayigamba, Commander of the RDF Engineer Contingent.
Collaboration between the Rwandan engineers, the Jamaica Defence Force, and other national institutions will take place under the agreed framework established between both countries.
