Jamaica Suffers Second All Island Power Outage of 2016

A significant portion of Jamaica was reportedly plunged into darkness on Saturday evening as a result of an island-wide power outage.

The Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) via its Facebook page has been providing several status updates.

The most recent update reads:

JPS has now restored power to customers in several parishes, following an all-island outage that took place just before 6:00pm.

Power has now been restored to sections of Kingston, St Catherine, Clarendon, Westmoreland, Hanover, St James, St. Elizabeth and Trelawny.

Customers are being gradually brought back onto the grid, and full restoration is expected in the next 3 – 4 hours.

Preliminary information suggests that the outage was caused by a procedural error, which resulted in a number of generating units going off-line simultaneously. The Company has started its investigations, but has indicated that its immediate priority is to get power supply back to customers as quickly and as safely as possible. An initial report on the outage is expected by Monday.
