Incredible! Calabar’s Javon Francis breaks Usain Bolt’s class one 400m Champs Record!
If you have ever wondered how Jamaica manages to produce some of the fastest athletes in the world year after year, you obviously are not familiar with CHAMPS.
The Inter-Secondary Schools Boys and Girls Championships (better known as the Champs) is an annual Jamaican multi-sport high school athletics meet held by Jamaica’s Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association.
The four day event, held during the last week before Easter in Kingston, has been considered a proving ground for many successful Jamaican athletes.
Today we were blessed with a phenomenal race by another promising Jamaican athlete when Calabar High School’s Javon Francis broke Usain Bolt’s Class One 400 metres record on today’s final day of the Championships at the National Stadium.
Francis crossed the finish line 45 seconds flat to erasing Bolt’s mark of 45.35 seconds which was done in 2003 while the athlete was representing William Knibb.
Nathan Allen of St Jago was well beaten in second in 46.16 seconds, while Lennox Williams of Manchester High finished third in 46.48.
Earlier Devon Spencer of St Elizabeth Technical High School set a new record in the Javelin with a 64.08 metre effort.
