Leptospirosis Suspected Cases Increase to 71

A total of 71 suspected leptospirosis cases has now been logged in Jamaica following the passage of Hurricane Melissa.
According to a statement issued on Thursday, the Health Ministry confirmed 26 of those cases after testing.
In its update, the Ministry also revealed that 12 deaths are under investigation for possible links to the disease.
Seven of those fatalities have been officially verified as leptospirosis-related.
Health officials noted that St. James, St. Ann and St. Elizabeth are receiving close surveillance because they have the highest concentration of suspected or confirmed infections.
St. James currently shows 15 recorded cases, while St. Ann has 12, and St. Elizabeth 8.
No additional communicable illnesses are posing concern at this time, the Ministry outlined.
Both dengue and influenza remain below seasonal expectations, with activity levels still under the usual thresholds.
Public health authorities are encouraging Jamaicans to exercise strong preventive measures to avoid contracting leptospirosis.
