Jamaica on Tropical Storm Watch as Melissa Approaches
A tropical storm watch remains active for Jamaica as Tropical Storm Melissa drifts slowly over the Caribbean Sea south of Hispaniola.
Forecasters warn that tropical storm conditions could reach Jamaica within the next 48 hours.
At 4:00 a.m., an Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft pinpointed Melissa’s center near latitude 14.3 North and longitude 73.5 West.
This location places the storm approximately 495 kilometres south-southwest of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and about 493 kilometres southeast of Morant Point, Jamaica.
Movement toward the west-northwest is currently measured at 11 km/h (7 mph), with expectations of a slowdown and a gradual shift to the northwest and north-northwest over the coming days.
Maximum sustained winds are near 85 km/h (50 mph), with stronger gusts possible, and some gradual intensification could see Melissa reach hurricane strength by Thursday.
Recent updates to the storm’s track suggest it may approach Jamaica before turning west on Saturday, passing south of the island into early next week.
Periods of moderate to heavy rain, combined with gusty winds, could affect northeastern and southern parishes starting Thursday and lasting through the weekend.
Mariners should anticipate widespread showers, thunderstorms, and tropical storm-force winds late Wednesday and Thursday.
Small craft operators, including fishers from cays and banks, are advised to head to port and secure vessels for safe harbour.
Meteorological authorities continue close monitoring of Melissa, and all interests are urged to follow further official updates.
