Thompson vs Lyles: Sprint Showdown Set for Diamond League Clash in Silesia

Fans of sprinting are set for a major showdown on August 16, as Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson—the fastest man in the world this year—lines up against American star Noah Lyles in the men’s 100 metres at the Wanda Diamond League meet in Silesia, Poland.

Their upcoming sprint battle will be the first time the two speedsters go head-to-head since their epic encounter in the Olympic 100m final last year in Paris.

Lyles won that tightly contested race with a personal best of 9.79 seconds, edging out Thompson by just five-thousandths of a second in one of the most dramatic finishes in Olympic history.

Thompson, though credited with the same time, walked away with silver in what was virtually a dead heat.

So far in 2025, the Jamaican sprinter has laid down a world-leading 9.75 seconds at his national championships, becoming the sixth-fastest man of all time.

In contrast, Lyles is coming off a dominant 200m victory at the U.S. trials, clocking a world-leading 19.63 seconds to win the national title last Sunday.

That performance confirms Lyles’ red-hot form in the half-lap event, although his 100m best this season stands at 10.00 seconds, placing him 34th in the rankings.

The women’s 100m is also set to captivate audiences as Olympic champion Julien Alfred returns to the track to battle Poland’s own Ewa Swoboda in front of a home crowd.

Scheduled to unfold at the Silesia Kamila Skolimowska Memorial, the event will also feature a stacked roster of elite athletes.

Names on the start list include world and Olympic champions like Faith Kipyegon, Femke Bol, Karsten Warholm, Armand Duplantis, Jakob Ingebrigtsen, Gianmarco Tamberi, and Grant Holloway.

Topping off the all-star cast is Ukraine’s Yaroslava Mahuchikh, fresh off her record-breaking leap that erased Stefka Kostadinova’s long-standing women’s high jump world mark.
