JHTA Optimistic About US Travel Advisory Re-evaluation

The Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association (JHTA) is hopeful that the ongoing re-evaluation of the United States travel advisory for Jamaica will bring positive changes.

During a press conference in Kingston on Wednesday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed the review while addressing the media alongside Prime Minister Andrew Holness.

His visit to the island was brief, but discussions included key concerns surrounding crime and security.

In July 2024, the United States issued a Level 3 travel advisory, urging Americans to reconsider travel to Jamaica due to crime.

The advisory also cautioned visitors about the country’s medical services, raising concerns among travellers.

Acknowledging Jamaica’s efforts, Rubio noted the decline in the country’s murder rate.

His comments signalled recognition of the strides made to improve safety and security.

JHTA President Robin Russell welcomed the development, expressing satisfaction that Jamaica’s work in tackling crime is being acknowledged.

He emphasised that a favourable update to the advisory would be beneficial, particularly for large groups hesitant to travel due to insurance concerns.

A more positive rating could enhance Jamaica’s appeal as a tourist destination, strengthening the industry’s recovery efforts.
