Reduction in GCT on Electricity Announced at JLP’s 81st Annual Conference

Prime Minister Andrew Holness announced a significant reduction in the General Consumption Tax (GCT) on electricity, dropping from 15% to 7% for all Jamaica Public Service (JPS) customers, starting next year.

This announcement was one of several made during the Jamaica Labour Party’s (JLP) 81st annual conference in Kingston on Sunday.

At the conference, JLP members were keen to highlight the party’s accomplishments in various sectors, including health, foreign affairs, social security, agriculture, and finance.

The event featured several speeches, all underscoring the party’s vitality and its readiness to govern the country in the upcoming general election.

JLP General Secretary, Dr. Horace Chang, reminded the audience of the party’s ability to lead the nation through crises, such as the Covid-19 pandemic.

He assured supporters that the necessary management and organisational structures were in place to ensure the party’s continued efficiency.

The conference also featured JLP youth ambassador Leeyon-lynn Layne, who spoke about the party’s efforts to empower the poor and the nation’s youth. She also highlighted changes related to the Students’ Loan Bureau.

When Prime Minister Holness addressed the crowd at approximately 2:23 pm, he outlined a series of initiatives aimed at addressing key issues affecting Jamaicans.

The announcement of the GCT reduction was met with jubilant applause from the crowd.

Holness also revealed plans to waive debts for individuals who had been disconnected from the National Water Commission’s network, as well as measures to offer subsidised transportation for students.

In response to recent protests by hotel workers over wages and working conditions, Holness also addressed concerns from that sector.

JLP supporters expressed satisfaction with the speech, with some indicating that Holness had clearly outlined policies that resonate with the concerns of everyday Jamaicans.
