Jamaica Labour Party Takes Preliminary Lead in 7 Parishes Following Local Elections
Both the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) and the People’s National Party (PNP) are asserting success following Monday’s local government elections.
Initial data suggests that the JLP has secured victory or is leading in seven out of the 13 municipal corporations contested, with Clarendon and Kingston and St. Andrew showing a tie between the parties.
The PNP has clinched victory or is leading in five areas, including Portmore.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness, addressing reporters at a late-night briefing at the JLP’s headquarters in Belmont Road, St. Andrew, on Monday, expressed confidence in his administration, interpreting the results as a vote of confidence from Jamaicans.
However, Holness acknowledged that voters have articulated longstanding concerns about local governance through their ballots.
Regarding the opposition’s stance, Holness dismissed any claim of victory from the PNP based on the election outcome.
Despite not completely ruling out the prospect of a general election this year, Mr. Holness holds the belief that Jamaicans currently lack interest in engaging in another electoral campaign at this juncture.
