Fraser-Pryce to Retire After the Paris Olympics
Jamaica’s illustrious three-time Olympic gold medallist, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, has declared her intention to retire after the upcoming Summer Games in Paris.
During an interview with Essence magazine, the 37-year-old sprinting powerhouse expressed her decision to step away from the sport to prioritise spending more time with her family.
“My son needs me,” she emphasised. “My husband and I have been together since before I won in 2008.
With a remarkable tally of eight Olympic medals and an impressive 10 world championship titles, Fraser-Pryce has left an indelible mark in the realm of sprinting, particularly excelling in the 100 metres discipline.
Her accolades include consecutive Olympic gold medals in 2008 and 2012, and a silver medal at the Tokyo Games in 2021.
Renowned for her electrifying speed and vibrant hairstyles, she has earned the moniker “pocket rocket” and remains one of the most recognisable figures on the track.
After welcoming her son Zion into the world in 2017, Fraser-Pryce secured an impressive trio of world titles and added two Olympic medals to her collection in Tokyo.
In her conversation with Essence magazine, Fraser-Pryce articulated her motivation for participating in this year’s Olympics in Paris as a testament to her commitment to “pushing boundaries” and demonstrating that one can retire from the sport on their own terms.
Fraser-Pryce is poised to contend for the 100m title at the upcoming Olympics, where she will face stiff competition from the likes of Sha’Carri Richardson of the USA, as well as fellow Jamaican athletes Shericka Jackson and Elaine Thompson-Herah.
The Summer Games are scheduled to commence on 26th July and culminate on 11th August, offering Fraser-Pryce another opportunity to etch her name into Olympic history before bidding farewell to the sport she has graced with her unparalleled talent and determination.
