Wendell Downswell to Lead Reggae Girls at Pan American Games in Chile

Jamaican football icon Wendell Downswell has been entrusted with the coaching reins for the Jamaican Women’s National Team, fondly known as the “Reggae Girls,” as they gear up for the highly anticipated Pan American Games in Chile.

The 18-member squad boasts  seven players hailing from the Jamaica Women’s Premier League Champions, Frazier’s Whip FC – namely Destiny Powell, Shaniel Buckley, LaToya Duhaney, Kiona Tulloch, Akeila Johnson, Janiel Mignott, and Andrene Smith.

The rest of the squad includes Tatanya Polack, Sajane Anderson, Ashanti Lewis, Kiersha Thomas, Sashana Campbell, Tamara O’Sullivan, Sheynne Bonnick, Sundai Amele, Elizabeth Miller, Chris-Ann Chambers, and Monique Pryce. 

Karen Lumsden will manage the team and Tyrese Palmer has been appointed as the equipment manager.

  

The Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile, will see over 6,800 athletes from 41 countries and territories compete in 20 different sports, with the ultimate goal of securing direct qualification for the Olympics in their respective disciplines.

Some sports will award spots based on quotas, ranking points, or minimum qualification standards.

The stage for this remarkable event is set at the 47,000-seat Estadio Nacional, where the opening ceremony is scheduled to take place this Friday.

Notably, six new venues dedicated to 30 sports were constructed around the Estadio Nacional with an investment of $507 million, demonstrating Chile’s commitment to hosting a world-class sporting event.
