Jamaica’s Netball Dominance: Sunshine Girls Crush Sri Lanka 105-25 in Spectacular World Cup Opener!

Jamaica had a spectacular start to their Netball World Cup campaign, achieving a resounding victory against Sri Lanka with a score of 105-25 in their Pool C clash held in Cape Town, South Africa on Friday.

In a display of technical prowess, the fourth-ranked Sunshine Girls dominated their 15th-ranked opponents throughout the game, refusing to let up.

Romelda Aiken-George and captain Jhaniele Fowler were tasked with goal shooting duties, each handling two quarters of the match. Fowler scored an impressive 42 goals out of 43 attempts, while Aiken-George secured 33 goals out of 34 attempts.

Contributing significantly, the goal attacks, Rebekah Robinson and Shanice Beckford, netted 17 and 13 goals, respectively.

This remarkable triumph propelled Jamaica to the top position in Pool C, surpassing the host team South Africa, who managed a 61-50 win over Wales.

Head coach of the Sunshine Girls – Connie Francis demonstrated strategic acumen by introducing two debutants, Latanya Wilson at goal defence and Crystal Plummer at wing defence. Additionally, Robinson and Aiken-George were given the starting goal attack and shooter positions ahead of Beckford and Fowler.

This match also marked a milestone, as it was the first time a team scored over 100 points at the World Cup since 2015 when Malawi achieved a similar feat against Sri Lanka.

Despite the Sunshine Girls’ impressive shooting performance with an 89 percent accuracy rate, they did encounter a concern with 17 turnovers, which Coach Francis aims to address in their upcoming matches.

The Sunshine Girls will next face Wales on Saturday. (4:00 am Jamaica time)
