Jamaica Surpasses One Million Visitor Arrivals to Date For 2023, Sets Sights on Future Growth and Resilience
Jamaica’s tourism industry has reached a significant milestone, with one million visitor arrivals recorded year-to-date for 2023, one month earlier than in 2022.
This news was announced by the Minister of Tourism, the Hon. Edmund Bartlett, during a press briefing at the 41st Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Association Caribbean Travel Marketplace held in Barbados.
Bartlett updated attendees on the country’s tourism arrivals and investments, noting that Jamaica welcomed 2,478,386 stopover arrivals from January to December 2022, a 69.2% increase over 2021 and almost reaching 2019 levels. He projected that Jamaica would attract more than 3.8 million visitors in 2023 and more than 5 million visitors in 2025.
To ensure this growth, Jamaica is investing in building new air service with additional flights from cities like Chicago, Denver, St. Louis, Dallas, Kansas City, and London Gatwick. The country is also modernising the Sangster International Airport and planning to construct around 8,000 new hotel rooms in the next two to five years.
Jamaica is committed to developing a more sustainable and diverse tourism product by implementing the Blue Ocean Strategy. The country has also established Global Tourism Resilience Day with the United Nations to increase awareness for tourism to build back stronger and protect itself from future disruptions.
The Director of Tourism, Donovan White, credited the success of Jamaica’s tourism arrivals to internal strategies, destination marketing initiatives, and partnerships with key travel partners. Bartlett emphasized the importance of managing the tourism industry through resilience building and putting plans in place to protect it from potential future shocks while highlighting Jamaica’s unique culture and heritage as key pillars for tourism.
