Hydel High Wins First Champs Title, Dethroning Edwin Allen
On Saturday night Hydel High School emerged as first-time champions at the 2023 ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls’ Athletics Championships held at the National Stadium.
They dethroned the previous champions, Edwin Allen High School, in a closely contested meet that came down to the final event of the competition, the 4x400m relay open.
Aaliah Baker’s exceptional performance on the anchor leg of the race secured second place for Hydel, which ultimately led to their two-point victory.
Edwin Allen High School had a six-point lead after winning the sprint medley open.
However, their joy quickly turned into disappointment after being disqualified for a lane violation, costing them 12 crucial points.
The deduction allowed Hydel to surge ahead by four points, and with their second-place finish in the 4x400m relay open, they secured the championship with a total of 279 points.
Edwin Allen High School finished second with 277 points, just shy of winning their ninth consecutive and tenth overall championship.
Holmwood Technical (202), St Jago High (178), and St Catherine High (116) rounded up the top five schools.
Edwin Allen High School had previously dominated the championship for the last eight years, making Hydel’s victory a remarkable achievement.
