First Solo Art Exhibition For Maia Chung At Reggae Mill
Award winning visual artist and photographer Maia Chung, is very committed to using her art life, to do something positive for Jamaican families affected by Cancer.
On the heels of receiving her first national award for painting this year, Chung was recently selected for a solo exhibition, her first…in the respected platform for artists Art Wednesdays, developed by OPA Jamaica owner, Alex Antaeus.
Chung’s exhibit was launched November 28, 2018, at the Reggae Mill Bar, where the weekly event is staged. The two week run for the exhibition ends on December 10, 2018. Ten percent of all sales from this exhibition will be donated to Cancer support entities in the Kingston and St. Andrew area of Jamaica.
The Reggae Mill Bar, is located inside the OPA Jamaica Restaurant, which is now located at the historic Devon House in Kingston Jamaica.
According to Chung, “having lost my parents to Cancer as at 2016 into 2017, I became aware of the many more pains associated with the disease, outside of the obvious. One of the things that struck me most was the financial drain.”
She added, “looking around for help in this area, I found a few support entities that assist families in this area and me and my family found them to be a blessing and life saving”.
She added that her art life, which resulted from her parents’ battle with Cancer, is dedicated to doing something for other Jamaican families who are affected in the same way. She announced earlier this year that her Autism and Disabilities Foundation had incorporated philanthropy geared towards the needs of Cancer affected Jamaicans.
Cancer is the number two killer of Jamaicans, according to the Ministry of Health.
Among other art projects that Chung, is currently involved in, are her artwork is currently on exhibition in Washington DC in the United States.
Chung’s work is representing Jamaica in the 2018 Sidewalk of the Americas global art installation, developed by the Inter-American Development Bank IDB.
She said, “I hope members of the public go and view my exhibition, it’s exciting to me to get a credible solo platform, which is a thing that artist strive for avidly during their careers”.
Chung was recently accepted to study at the Jamaican art school, Edna Manley College for the visual arts, as she would love to teach art to specials needs children.
