Police Officers Begin Using Body Cameras

On Monday (February 20), the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF)  officially implemented the use of body cameras in some police divisions.

The four divisions now benefiting from the cameras are Kingston Eastern, Kingston Central, St. Andrew Central and Kingston Western.

In August of last year, vthe Police High Command announced the Body-Worn Camera Project, a collaborative initiative of the US Embassy and the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF).

According to the police, the initiative serves to further professionalise the JCF and to improve interactions between its members and the public.

Last year a total of 120 body cameras were donated by the United States Government as part of a pilot that is expected to improve accountability, human rights record and public trust in the nation’s police.

Police high command said the cameras are expected to be worn on the pockets or vests of officers and data captured from them will be uploaded at the end of each duty.
