Storm Watch! Developing Tropical System Nears Jamaica

Jamaica is expected to get heavy rains and gusty winds courtesy of  a tropical wave in the Caribbean, which meteorologists say has a 90 percent chance of becoming a depression or storm.

A tropical storm watch is now officially in effect for Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and the Cayman Islands.

The tropical wave could become the Atlantic’s fifth named storm of 2016.

As of Monday morning, Invest 97L was located about 350 miles east-southeast of Kingston, Jamaica, and was moving west at 20-25 mph.

The Meteorological Center says it already had tropical storm force winds of 40-45 mph.

A second wave is being monitored, nearly 700 miles west-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands.

The 2016 Atlantic hurricane season began June 1 and ends Nov. 30.

According to the Met Service, a tropical storm watch means that tropical storm conditions pose a possible threat to the island within 48 hours.
