A Jamaican woman was victorious at the Global Entrepreneurship Summit currently taking place in Silicon Valley, California after winning the Spark the Fire Startup Pitch Startup Award.
Kenia Mattis was reportedly chosen as a finalist from more than 5,000 applicants around the world.
Spark the Fire pitch competition is a special program that focuses on top global youth and women entrepreneurs.
A primary aim of the competition is to help emerging entrepreneurs from around the world seeking investment, as well as start and scale their venture.
Ms. Mattis is the Chief Executive Officer of ListenMi Caribbean, a digital media production company which produces digital media content in the form of audio books, music and apps.
Her victory means that her company will be awarded US$15,000, US$1,000 AirBnB credit, and the opportunity to pitch directly to some of the leading venture capitalists and angel investors in the United States.
A total of four Jamaicans were reportedly chosen to participate in the summit.
The others are Nicole Crawford-Thompson, who is the co-founder and CEO of Niritech Limited and Yaneek Page, Founder and CEO of The Innovators School Clubs.
CEO of Edufocal Jamaica, Gordon Swaby, also addressed the summit yesterday at Stanford University. Ms. Mattis says winning the award is a victory for education in Jamaica.
