Jamaican Teenager Creates History By Qualifying For Winter Youth Olympics
The beautiful island of Jamaica is situated in the Caribbean Sea and has been blessed with a Tropical Marine Climate.
Throughout a typical year, there are hardly any major shifts in temperature.
Our warmest months are usually July and August, during which temperatures on the coasts are typically in the 90s (Fahrenheit).
During our cooler months (December through February), Jamaicans oftentimes find it difficult to cope with the slightly cooler temperatures which regularly dip into the low 80s and high 70s (Fahrenheit).
These temperatures are nowhere near the required atmospheric temperature to facilitate snow (32 degrees Fahrenheit).
Despite being a tropical nation, Jamaica surprised the world when it produced a bobsleigh team that competed in the 1988 Winter Olympic Games in Calgary, Alberta (Canada).
Now a Jamaican teenager has created history by becoming the first person from the island to qualify for the Winter Youth Olympics.
17-year-old Daniel Mayhew, a St Catherine native and Charlemont High School student will also be the first Jamaican among 14 other nationals to compete at the first international monobob at the 2016 Winter Youth Olympics.
A monobob is unlike a traditional bobsleigh. It has only one operator while the more popular bobsleighs are operated by two or four persons. This makes it more challenging to master.
It’s hard to imagine but Mayhew began in the sport only a year ago, in February 2015 and will be attempting to secure Jamaica’s first ever Olympic Winter Games medal at any level!
We wish you all the best Daniel!
