Chris Gayle Returns to Rousing Cheers after Controversial Interview
Former West Indies captain Chris Gayle was greeted with a chorus of cheers from fans and a warm hug from a team member as he walked out onto Etihad Stadium on Saturday night.
He returned to the field for the first time following his highly controversial live TV interview in which he jokingly asked a reporter out on a date.
“I came to have this interview with you to see your eyes for the first time. So hopefully we can win this game and have a drink after,” said Gayle during the interview with mel McLaughlin.
“Don’t blush baby,” he also added.
Gayle was fined $10,000 by his club – Melbourne Renegades for his comments, a move which many believed was too harsh.
There have also been calls for Cricket Australia to propose a worldwide contracting ban on the Jamaican.
Gayle made 21 runs from 21 deliveries in the game on Saturday night, smashing two sixes in the process. West Indian batsman Dwayne Bravo was unbeaten with 59 off 37 deliveries.
The Renegades failed to reach the 156 runs required to ensure victory ending on 155 with six wickets lost after 20 overs..
