US State Department Believes J’can Gov’t Monitored Private Online Conversations

The 2014 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices was released on Friday by the US State Department.

According to the report, “the Jamaican government did not restrict or disrupt access to the internet or censor online content.”

“There were credible reports, however, that the government monitored private online communications without appropriate legal authority.”

This, the report said, was according to the International Telecommunication Union, which stated that 38 per cent of citizens used the Internet in 2013.

According to the Observer, State minister in the Ministry of Technology Julian Robinson has challenged US authorities to provide proof of the allegations laid against the Portia Simpson Miller-led Government.
