Government Seriously Considering Allowing Jamaicans Living Overseas to Vote
The debate over whether Jamaicans living overseas should be allowed to vote in local elections has always been a hot one.
According to the Gleaner, while speaking at the 6th Biennial Jamaica Diaspora Conference on Sunday, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign trade, Senator A.J. Nicholson said the matter of allowing overseas nationals to participate in the country’s electoral process will be discussed at length, so that the best arrangement can be put in place.
He also said the matter has been included in the draft national Diaspora policy aimed at enhancing Jamaica’s social and economic development and is ready to be taken to the Cabinet for deliberation.
Recently opposition leader Andrew Holness asked the government to look into ways to allow Jamaicans the opportunity to vote in Jamaica.
