Silverware Up For Grabs For Next Reggae Boyz Boss
Jamaica can put their World Cup qualifying woes behind them and concentrate on tackling next month’s Unity Cup in England
Rudolph Speid seems poised to be appointed as Jamaica head coach, despite being unable to navigate the Reggae Boyz into this summer’s World Cup finals.
Should the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) hand the 64-year-old the reins, his first task will be trying to lift the 2026 Unity Cup in London.
The four-team tournament pitches the Boyz against India on 28 May, with the winner tackling either Nigeria or Zimbabwe on 31 May.
Charlton Athletic’s The Valley will host the competition, which is familiar territory for four Jamaica players who ply their trade with the England Championship side.
Defender Amari’i Bell, midfielder Karoy Anderson and forward Tyreece Campbell have become a fan favourite, while striker Kaheim Dixon turns out for Charlton’s U21 team.
The Boyz were left heartbroken at last year’s Unity Cup final. They were pipped 5-4 in a penalty shootout by defending champions Nigeria following a thrilling 2-2 stalemate.
As Jamaica’s stars in North America and the UK were unavailable for the tournament, ex-England manager Steve McClaren named an experimental squad that included nine Jamaica Premier League aces.
McClaren prompted resigned after the Boyz were held 0-0 by surprise package Curacao in last November’s CONCACAF World Cup qualifier. A victory inside Kingston’s National Stadium would have propelled Jamaica to a first FIFA World Cup since their 1998 debut in France.
Speid was appointed until the end of March, with his goal to steer the Boyz into the 2026 World Cup via the FIFA Inter-Continental Play-Offs Tournament in Mexico. He masterminded a nervy 1-0 success over minnows New Caledonia, but Jamaica’s dreams were dashed by being toppled 1-0 in extra time by DR Congo.
He warmed up for this all-important showdown with friendly wins over Grenada and Martinque, which were not much of a true test. His record of three wins on the bounce and only a narrow defeat lifts Speid into pole position for the Jamaica head coach vacancy.
The JFF are expected to make an announcement before the end of the month, although Speid has claimed that he’s contemplating other managerial offers away from the island.
It appears highly likely that Speid will be back in charge, despite some fierce criticism from fans during his five-month stint that included an online petition which referred to him as “a poison to the Jamaican national football team”. There’s also the potential conflict of interest for Speid as owner of Cavalier SC.
Miquel Coley, Speid’s recent assistant, may be on JFF’s shortlist of candidates as he tasted success with the Boyz as no.2 to Winfried Schafer. However, the 44-year-old Coley is unlikely to relinquish his position as interim manager of Zakho SC in Iraq.
Whoever the JFF select as head coach has a chance to quickly snap up silverware before the CONCACAF Nations League, with four group games to be played during September and October. A 2027 CONCACAF Gold Cup berth is up for grabs if Jamaica can reach November’s two-legged Nations League quarter-finals.
The Boyz will fancy their chances of overcoming FIFA world-ranked no.136 India in next month’s Unity Cup semi-final showdown. Victory could set up a glorious opportunity to avenge last year’s dramatic defeat to Nigeria, who are anticipated to easily brush aside Zimbabwe in the other semi-final.
Breaking Nigeria’s 100% winning record at the FIFA-approved Unity Cup is going to be a tough task for the next Jamaica head coach, but will kick off a new chapter for the Boyz.
