Lampart Secures First Jamaican Win on Day One at Penn Relays 2026
Jamaican athletes delivered a strong collective showing in the discus event at the Penn Relays, occupying positions from second through fifth in a tightly contested field.
Edwin Allen’s Dionjah Shaw led that group with a throw of 48.87 metres, while her teammate Jamela Young followed closely with 48.66 metres. Hydel’s Brandae Malcolm and Marymount’s Tanique Dunn completed the sequence of top-five finishes behind the event winner.
That winner emerged despite challenging circumstances, as Clarendon College’s Marla Kay Lampart secured the top spot with a final preliminary round mark of 14.41 metres. Her performance proved decisive in the standings, placing her ahead of a field dominated by fellow Jamaican competitors.
Lampart entered the competition managing an injury, which added a layer of difficulty to her appearance. Despite that setback, she went on to complete the event and produced her winning effort in her final attempt of the preliminary phase.
Her participation itself came under pressure, as she was urged by her coach to compete and see through the event. The decision ultimately resulted in a victory, marking a significant outcome given the conditions under which she performed.
The result also carried wider significance, as it represented the first win by a Jamaican athlete on the opening day of the 130th staging of the Penn Relays in Philadelphia.
Lampart, the reigning ISSA Girls Champs Class 1 Girls champion, added another notable achievement to her season with this performance, continuing her presence among the leading competitors at the school level.
The Penn Relays, now in its 130th edition, continues to attract strong participation, with Jamaican athletes again featuring prominently in multiple events on the opening day.
