Jamaica Under Hurricane Warning as Melissa Strengthens

A Hurricane Warning is now in force for Jamaica as Tropical Storm Melissa rapidly approaches, with forecasters expecting the system to strengthen into a hurricane this morning.

According to the Meteorological Service, at 4:00 a.m. the storm’s centre was positioned near latitude 16.3° North and longitude 75.0° West. This places it roughly 385 kilometres (240 miles) southwest of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, about 220 kilometres (137 miles) southeast of Morant Point, and 270 kilometres (165 miles) southeast of Kingston.

The weather system is currently moving northwest at about 6 km/h (3 mph), with a gradual shift to a west-northwest and later westward track projected through Sunday night. Meteorologists anticipate a turn toward the north and northeast on Monday and Tuesday.

Presently, maximum sustained winds are recorded near 110 kilometres (70 mph), accompanied by stronger gusts. Meteorologists say rapid intensification is imminent, with Melissa forecast to become a hurricane today and potentially reach major hurricane status by Sunday.

Winds associated with the storm extend up to 185 kilometres (115 miles) from its centre, threatening to bring hazardous conditions to Jamaica. On its current path, Melissa’s centre is expected to move from south to north across central Jamaica early next week, then continue over eastern Cuba by midweek.

Forecast models indicate torrential rainfall, with totals between 350 and 650 millimetres (15 to 25 inches) likely over parts of the island in the coming days. Authorities warn that severe flooding and landslides could occur as a result.

As the system nears, tropical storm-force winds should begin to impact eastern parishes by tonight, while hurricane conditions are expected between Sunday and Monday.

Fishers and small craft operators are being strongly urged to stay in safe harbour until official warnings are lifted and sea conditions return to normal.
