Jamaican Football Legend Allan “Skill” Cole Has Died

Shockwaves are being felt throughout the Jamaican football community following the death of Allan “Skill” Cole, a former national midfielder who passed away on Tuesday evening at the age of 74.
Cole became a household name in local football after shining for the celebrated Vere Technical DaCosta Cup squads of the 1960s, where he netted 38 goals in his first season in 1965.
At only 15 years old, he earned the honour of representing Jamaica’s senior team for the first time against a Brazilian side, making him the youngest player to ever wear the national jersey.
The talented midfielder also ventured overseas, appearing in the United States with the Atlanta Chiefs in the late 1960s, before moving to Brazil in the early 1970s to suit up for Nautica.
While back in Jamaica, he played a vital role in the dominant Santos team that lifted three straight National League trophies, securing his reputation as one of the nation’s premier midfielders.
After hanging up his boots, Cole stayed involved in the sport as a coach, guiding several clubs such as Arnett Gardens, Port Morant United, and Rockfort in the Major League.
Widespread tributes have been offered by football figures and public officials alike, underscoring his impact on the game.
In a message shared on Instagram, Opposition Leader Mark Golding remembered him as “a Jamaican legend who many consider our greatest ever footballer, with silky, elegant passing skills and ball control that were second to none.”
Golding also drew attention to Cole’s influence outside the pitch, stressing his connection with Bob Marley and other major artists of the era, which helped shape reggae’s evolution.
According to Golding, his generosity in recounting stories from that pivotal cultural period was invaluable, and his life’s work deserves to be preserved “among the annals of Jamaica’s great personalities.”
