Thompson and Nugent Impress as Jamaicans Shine at Prefontaine Classic

Kishane Thompson and Ackera Nugent produced standout performances on Saturday at the Prefontaine Classic in Hayward Field, Oregon, helping to cap off an electrifying day that also featured two world records.
Demonstrating his fine form just a week after securing his second national title, Thompson surged to victory in the men’s 100 metres with a time of 9.85 seconds, defeating a talented lineup.
Zharnel Hughes of Great Britain claimed second in 9.91, while American Trayvon Bromell followed closely with 9.94 to take third place.
Clocking 10.03 seconds, Akeem Blake, another Jamaican entrant, managed a fifth-place finish in the highly competitive race.
Ackera Nugent added to Jamaica’s success with a brilliant display in the women’s 100m hurdles, storming across the line in 12.32 seconds — one of the season’s top marks.
Trailing her in second was Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan, the current world record holder, who posted 12.38, while Kendra Harrison of the United States finished third in 12.50.
Danielle Williams, Jamaica’s reigning world champion, delivered a season-best 12.51 but had to settle for fifth place in the closely contested event.
Adding to the Jamaican presence, Tina Clayton showed promise in the women’s 100 metres by finishing fourth in 11.02 seconds.
Victory in that event went to American sprinter Melissa Jefferson-Wooden, who won convincingly with a time of 10.75.
Trailing her were Olympic champion Julian Alfred of St. Lucia in 10.77 and Ivory Coast’s Marie-Josée Ta Lou-Smith, who claimed third with 10.90.
Bryan Levell, Jamaica’s national champion in the 200 metres, finished sixth in 20.25 seconds as he faced stiff competition.
Securing the win in that event, Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo dazzled the crowd with an exceptional 19.76 run, underlining his Olympic credentials.
