Cavalier FC ace lands two-year deal with Scottish Premiership club

Richard King, a key player for Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz, will be tackling the Scottish top tier next season if he passes a medical and gets UK visa approval.

The 23-year-old centre back has secured a two-year contract with St. Mirren, with an option to extend for an additional term.

King, who hails from the Clarendon Parish, is currently on duty with Jamaica at the CONCACAF Gold Cup. He is expected to earn his 30th international cap when the Boyz face minnows Guadeloupe in their second group game.

The Cavalier FC star struggled during the first-half of Jamaica’s shock 1-0 defeat to Guatemala on 16 June, replaced by Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Dexter Lembikisa.

Jamaica Premier League ace King has come on leaps and bounds under Jamaica head coach Steve McClaren, who took over the reins last year.

He was on St. Mirren’s radar for a considerable time, with manager Stephen Robinson landing their target during a summer revamp.

Midfielders Roland Idowu (Shrewsbury Town) and Killian Phillips (Crystal Palace) have recently joined the Scottish side on loan.

Robinson told the official St. Mirren FC website: “Richard King is a player I tried to sign in January. We had tracked him for a long time and kept up with his progress.

“He has progressed really well under Steve McLaren and the Jamaican national team. He’s quick, he’s strong, and he’s a project for us as well as it’s a step up in level.

“I had a really good conversation with Richard and the Cavalier owner, and we are aligned in our thinking in terms of giving Richard a good platform.

“We believe he can be a really good asset for the football club when he returns from playing in the CONCACAF Gold Cup.”
