Prime Minister Andrew Holness officially opened the Morant Bay Urban Centre in St Thomas on Thursday, marking the completion of six years of construction.

The $6 billion facility is a key part of the Government’s broader push to stimulate economic growth and infrastructure development in the parish.

The centre is expected to house various public sector agencies and commercial enterprises and will be followed by a number of major initiatives aimed at transforming the long-neglected parish.

Among the projects announced is the development of a multi-purpose entertainment and sports facility on 13.5 acres of nearby land.

Plans are also in place for a new medical complex within the urban centre, which will include 25 specialised units and an accident and emergency facility.

Holness also outlined the Government’s intention to accelerate housing development across the parish.

Several housing projects are already underway, and at least three more are planned for over 3,000 acres of land to provide a mix of low-, middle-, and upper-income housing.

An additional 10-acre expansion of the urban centre is also planned, focusing on facilities for micro and small businesses.

The Government is working to secure surrounding lands to support future growth and ensure long-term sustainability of the development.

The Morant Bay Urban Centre is positioned as a catalyst for economic activity in St Thomas, with further projects aimed at enhancing healthcare, housing, and employment opportunities for residents.
