Jamaica Could Triple Visitor Arrivals with Continued Drop in Crime – Tourism Minister

Jamaica’s tourism sector could experience an unprecedented surge in visitor arrivals—potentially tripling current numbers—if the country maintains its downward trajectory in crime.

This bold projection was made by Minister of Tourism Edmund Bartlett, who highlighted the strong link between national security and tourism growth.

The Minister’s statement reinforces Prime Minister Andrew Holness’ recent remarks that crime remains the single greatest barrier to Jamaica achieving between 10 and 15 million visitors annually.

Addressing stakeholders at a scholarship fundraiser in St. James, the Prime Minister made it clear that sustained crime reduction is critical to unlocking the island’s full tourism potential.

Minister Bartlett, who also serves as Member of Parliament for St. James East Central, pointed to the steady decline in violent crime as a key driver behind the island’s growing appeal to international travellers.

With a safer environment, Jamaica is becoming more than just a beautiful destination—it is emerging as a secure and welcoming place for both visitors and locals.

He underscored that Jamaica is already reaping the benefits of improved safety.

Recent tourism figures show rising visitor arrivals and increased revenue, a trend that reflects growing international confidence in the country’s stability.

If this momentum continues, Bartlett is confident that Jamaica could triple its current visitor numbers.

The Minister further indicated that the improving crime situation could influence the U.S. Department of State’s travel advisory, currently under review, which would further boost the island’s global image.
