Jamaican-Born Raheem Sterling Named Among Britain’s Most Influential Black Footballers

Jamaican-born Arsenal forward Raheem Sterling has been recognised as one of Britain’s most influential black footballers after securing a place on the prestigious Football Black List 2024.
Now in its 16th year, the annual initiative celebrates black professionals making outstanding contributions to football both on and off the pitch.
Sterling features alongside Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings, Tottenham forward Richarlison and Queens Park Rangers Women’s Kasha Petit in the players’ category.
Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Sterling moved to England aged five and has become renowned for his advocacy work promoting equality in football alongside his on-field achievements.
The Football Black List, established in 2008, recognises talent across eight categories including coaching, media and administration.
Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espírito Santo and Port Vale boss Darren Moore were acknowledged in the coaching section, along with England Under-21s assistant Ashley Cole and Arsenal Women’s Under-21s coach Carly Williams.
Co-founder Leon Mann emphasised the list’s dual role in celebrating black excellence while highlighting ongoing underrepresentation in football’s leadership structures. The initiative continues to push for greater diversity in boardrooms, technical areas and senior management positions across the game.
Other notable inclusions were Manchester United’s Maria Tavares in the practitioners category, Burnley’s Lola Ogunbote for administration, and Sky Sports’ Courtney Sweetman-Kirk in media.
