Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson Wins Silver in 100m Olympic Final

Kishane Thompson

Kishane Thompson clinched a silver medal with a time of 9.79 seconds (1.0 m/s), identical to the winning time of USA’s Noah Lyles in the men’s 100m final at the Olympics held at Stade de France in Paris on Sunday.

This marks Jamaica’s third medal at the Olympics, following Shaneika Ricketts’ silver in the triple jump and Rajindra Campbell’s bronze in the shot put on Saturday.

Despite mixed emotions in Paris, Thompson’s medal is the first for a Jamaican man in any major global championships since Usain Bolt’s bronze at the 2017 World Championships.

Competing in just his eighth race of the season, the 23-year-old demonstrated remarkable composure to secure his first-ever medal at any level in only his second major final.

Oblique Seville, who performed impressively in the semi-finals, finished eighth with a time of 9.91 seconds.

After an unusually prolonged hold at the start line, Thompson was narrowly beaten by Lyles, the reigning World Champion, by a mere thousandth of a second. Former World Athletics Champion Fred Kerley finished third with a season’s best of 9.81 seconds.
