Substantive Arguments to Begin Today in Vybz Kartel and Co-Appellants’ Case
Substantive arguments regarding the potential retrial of entertainer Vybz Kartel and his co-appellants are set to begin today in the Court of Appeal.
During yesterday’s session, prosecutors objected to parts of the affidavits filed by the men and their relatives.
Key issues raised include Kartel’s health and his ability to withstand a retrial, the extensive publicity surrounding the case, and concerns about the fairness of a new trial.
One of Kartel’s attorneys, Alessandra LaBeach, says preliminary matters were addressed yesterday and her team is ready for today’s proceedings.
Additionally, the Appeal Court has requested a report from the Supreme Court detailing how retrial cases have been handled over the past six years.
Vybz Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, along with Shawn Campbell (also known as Shawn Storm), Andre St John, and Kahira Jones, had their murder convictions overturned by the Privy Council in March.
They were originally convicted for the 2011 murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams.
