Jamaican-born Leon Edwards Dominates Covington for Welterweight Title Defense

Jamaican-born Leon Edwards successfully defended his UFC welterweight title for the second time, outclassing Colby Covington in the main event at UFC 296, the last pay-per-view event of the year.

The pre-fight tension escalated on Thursday during a press conference when Covington, known for his brash persona, brought family matters into the spotlight, negatively referencing Edwards’ late father, who tragically lost his life when Edwards was just a teenager.

Despite the attempt to unsettle his opponent, Covington failed to translate the prefight drama into success inside the Octagon.

From the opening bell, Edwards (22-3, 1 NC) showcased his class, controlling the majority of the fight against Covington (17-4).

With exception of a brief period in the second half of Round 5 where Covington managed to subdue Edwards on the mat, the Jamaican-born fighter dictated the pace and strategy throughout the match.

The judges’ unanimous decision (49-46, 49-46, 49-46) reflected Edwards’ dominance and secured his place as one of the most formidable welterweights in the UFC.

Not only did Edwards claim victory inside the Octagon, but he also took home four prestigious trophies at the Fighters Only World MMA Awards on Thursday night, including the coveted Fighter of the Year award.

With an impressive 13-fight unbeaten streak dating back to 2015, Edwards now holds the second-longest winning streak in welterweight history.

Covington, on the other hand, suffered his third loss in his last five fights (17-4), raising questions about his future in the highly competitive welterweight division.
