COVID-19 Delta Variant Fuels Mounting Concern In The United States
The spread of the highly contagious Delta variant of COVID-19 has resulted in a rise in infections and hospitalisations in the United States, even in communities with high vaccination rates.
The Delta variant which was first identified in India, is capable of infecting fully vaccinated people at a greater rate than previous versions.
27.6% of the world population has received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.
According to Our World in Data, over 300 thousand doses have been administered in Jamaica with 122 thousand persons already being fully vaccinated.
Hopes that the pandemic would begin to fade away have been somewhat dimmed by the spread of the variant.
U.S. officials are now reconsidering whether to revise mask guidance for people who have already been fully vaccinated. Los Angeles County, the most populous in the United States, is once again requiring masks even among the vaccinated in indoor public spaces.
Some state leaders, including New York’s mayor, Bill de Blasio, and the California governor, Gavin Newsom, have already announced mandates for government employees to be vaccinated.
