While speaking at a press conference on Thursday (March 5), he said health officials have been keeping an eye on the spread of the disease globally and have devised a model to more accurately determine how the virus is likely to spread in Jamaica.

“The modeling is suggesting that if the virus comes to Jamaica and follows the normal pattern of spread as we’ve had in terms of other SARs or influenza type occurrences, we could see up to 1.1 to 1.7 million persons in the population being impacted by the virus.

The fatality rate for Covid-19 varies wildly by age with persons 60 years and older appearing to be hit the hardest.
