Chelsea Lead Chase For Jamaica’s Bailey
£85m price tag on midfielder after recent wonder goal
Leon Bailey, the Jamaican midfield maestro, is firmly on the radar of leading English Premier League sides following his stinging midweek wonder goal against Rangers in the Europa League. The 22-year-old, who has only made four appearances for Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz, curled his effort exquisitely into the top corner as German outfit Bayer Leverkusen stunned hosts Rangers 3-1. Bailey has long been on the radar of top-flight English clubs including Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United.
After his 78th-minute strike as a second-half substitute at Ibrox in Glasgow on Thursday (March 12), Chelsea are believed to now be the favourites to sign the Kingston-born ace.
With three years remaining on his contract with the Bundesliga team, Bailey’s valuation is believed to be in the region of £85m.
He has bagged 24 goals in 105 appearances for the German club, and also attracted long-term attention from Bayern Munich.
Although Leverkusen would prefer to sell one of their numerous stars to an English side rather than a rival, Craig Butler’s stepfather and manager has indicated that Bailey is best plying his trade in the Bundesliga for the foreseeable future.
Chelsea had scouts at Thursday’s Europa League match, and their manager Frank Lampard is eager to continue building his side around younger players.
Bailey, hampered by injury this season, has bagged five goals for Leverkusen this term but his latest strike has prompted clubs to start chasing him for his signature.
