Wes Morgan Pens Deal To Stay At Leicester City
Ex-Jamaica skipper ends speculation over football future
Wes Morgan, the former Jamaica captain, has signed a new one-year deal for Premier League (PL) outfit Leicester City.
The veteran defender’s future with the ex-PL champions had been in doubt for some time under French coach Claude Puel.
But Puel was relieved of his duties three weeks ago and Brendan Rodgers arrived from Scottish giants Celtic to replace him.
Morgan’s future remained up in the air under Rodgers, as the club captain has recently been left on the bench.
But the burly 35-year-old made an impact last Saturday, scoring a late winner against strugglers Burnley to seal maximum points for Leicester on his 700th club appearance.
Born and raised in Nottingham, Morgan went on to play over 400 games for his local side Nottingham Forest before moving across the East Midlands seven years ago to become a stawart at Leicester and proudly lift the PL title in 2016 under Italian coach Claudio Ranieri.
Morgan’s international career was going great guns too, making his debut in 2013 but last donning a gold jersey in 2016.
He has been overlooked ever since Jamaica head coach Winfried Schäfer was axed. Theodore Whitmore returned for a third shot at the helm, and with a limited budget has rarely called up any European-based players for international duty.
Morgan made 30 appearances for Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz – mainly as captain – and was on the pitch for every minute during their 2015 Gold Cup finals campaign, when they finished runner-up to Mexico.
He also famously played every minute of Leicester’s extraordinary PL title-winning 2016 season, and in March 2017 became he first Jamaican player to score in a UEFA Champions League match. Morgan bundled home a first-half goal against Spanish side Sevilla that helped Leicester book a berth in the Champions League quarter-finals.
But it was last weekend’s strike that has made fans favourite Morgan happy, impressing Rodgers enough to win a one-year extension and end the speculation over his future.
