Jamaican International Williams Wins Medal
MLS Cup success for striker as fellow Reggae Boy finishes runner-up
Romario Williams, the rarely used striker for Jamaica, won a MLS Cup medal for US side Atlanta United on Sunday.
The 24-year-old from Portmore was not in the squad for the final against Portland Timbers, who had fellow Reggae Boyz international Alvas Powell feature as an 82nd-minute substitute.
Josef Martinez and Franco Escobar were on target at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium at Atlanta, Georgia. The result gave manager Tato Martino a 2-0 send-off in his final game in charge before he takes over as Mexico head coach.
Williams, who has only played three MLS games for Atlanta since joining last season from Canadian outfit Montreal Impact, has represented Jamaica seven times and finished runners up with the Boyz in the 2017 Concacaf Gold Cup.
And although he has yet to be involved in an MLS Cup tie with Atlanta is part of their 32-player squad.
Atlanta, who finished runners up in the Eastern Conference during the regular season, were only formed in 2014 and started competing in the MLS last term.
Their triumph is the city’s first major professional sports title this century, following in the footsteps of the 1995 success of baseball team Atlanta Braves claiming the MLB World Series.
Powell, a defender from the parish of St. Thomas and a 2014 Caribbean Cup champion with Jamaica, has already tasted MLS Cup success in 2015. But the 24-year-old finished second best in front of Sunday’s record-breaking MLS Cup final crowd of 73,019.
Within a minute of arriving he was sent through by Sebastian Blanco, but scuffed the ball away only a few feet in front of goal in what turned out to be Timbers’ best chance to score.
