Elderly Jamaican-Born Woman Scammed Out Of Life Savings in New York
An elderly Jamaican woman was recently scammed out of her life savings in New York, after falling victim to a scam.
65-year-old Dorothy Edge was reportedly approached by a woman who told her that her visa was about to expire and she needed to return to her native South Africa.
According to PIX11, the woman told Edge she wanted to donate $100,000 from a massive inheritance. She said she couldn’t bring the money back to South Africa, and asked Edge to donate the money on her behalf.
The woman reportedly said she wanted to be certain that Edge had money of her own so she could be sure Edge would not rip her off.
The elaborate scam also involved a man who apparently posed as a pastor and volunteered to join Edge in donating.
Edge, who previously worked as a nanny eventually handed over her life savings of US $28,000 to the pastor and the woman who claimed to be from South Africa as they claimed they wanted to bless the money.
However, after they returned what Edge believed was her money, she discovered that the bag she received contained shredded newspaper.
