Jamaican Teen Brianna Lyston Labeled “Next Usain Bolt”
12-year-old Brianna Lyston, a student at St Jago High has garnered global attention following her mind boggling feat at the recently concluded ISSA/Grace Kennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships – commonly referred to as Champs.
Lyston posted a record-breaking time of 23.72 in the Class 4 (under-13) 200 metre final at Champs.
To put that into context, her clocking falls just 2.38 seconds behind the female world record of 21.34 set by the American sprinter Florence Griffith-Joyner at the 1988 Olympic Games.
Her closest rival, Oneika McAnnuff was behind by 0.88 seconds.
Lyston also took the 100m dash in her Under-13 age group at Class Four level, winning the final in 11.86 seconds.
Two years ago, at 10 years of age Lyston clocked 42.41 seconds in the 300m at the Caribbean Union Teachers Championships in Trinidad and Tobago. That time was more than a second quicker than the winner of the boys’ race.
It should not be too surprising that many pundits of the sport are now labeling her Jamaica’s “Next Usain Bolt”.
