The most recent projections for Hurricane Matthew show the massive storm moving away from the island.

As of 5 am Sunday, October 2, Matthew, which is the strongest hurricane in the Atlantic region since 2007 is now a Category 4 storm with winds of 150mph.

Previous computer generated projections showed Matthew passing close or above Jamaica’s eastern tip, however updated projections now predict the hurricane shifting eastward and possibly striking Haiti’s southern tip as a Category 3 hurricane on Monday.

If the storm does ‘thread the needle’ between Jamaica and Haiti, Jamaica would be largely spared from the brunt of the hurricane.

After passing Haiti and Jamaica, the storm is predicted to make landfall on Cuba on Tuesday, possibly making a direct hit on the U.S. Navy base at Guantanamo Bay.

On Saturday (October 1), Jamaicans across the island reportedly flocked to supermarkets to stock up on canned food and other items in anticipation of the hurricane.
