Jamaica Spared But Haiti Suffers – 108 Deaths From Hurricane Matthew

Jamaicans continue to breathe a sigh of relief that Hurricane Matthew veered from its expected path, sparing the island from the brunt of the impressive storm.

Initial projections placed Jamaica directly in Matthew’s cross-hair but the storm eventually passed close to the island with Haiti’s eastern tip being impacted heavily by the category 4 hurricane.

Haiti which suffered catastrophic damage and loss of life during a powerful earthquake in 2010 also has a huge deforestation problem.

As a result, a large portion of the country’s hillsides have been left naked, rendering them unable to withhold water. Many of the country’s hillsides, as a result, are also highly susceptible to erosion.

On Tuesday Haiti was ravaged by Hurricane Matthew as the powerful storm passed over the country.

Haiti’s Interior Minister Francois Anick Joseph has now announced that at least 108 persons have perished there as a result of Hurricane Matthew.

Earlier reports by Haitian officials stated that at least 23 individuals were killed as a result of the storm while another 27 persons were injured and three others missing.
