German Discus Champ Criticises Bolt

Olympic and European discus champion Robert Hartling has criticised Jamaica’s Usain Bolt for not being vocal enough in the fight to rid athletics of doping.

Bolt is currently aiming to win the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay titles for a third-straight time at the Olympic games.

Track and field has been plagued by numerous doping scandals in recent years and Bolt who is regarded as a sort of ‘saviour’ for the sport will certainly be missed following his retirement.

According to the Herald Sun, the German discus thrower recently stated “I would ask him why he does not go on the offensive, in any way, on the subject of doping. The best known athlete in the world must join the current discussions and fight for a clean sport, especially since a lot of sprinters have tested positive and he also has been accused on a massive scale”.

“The fact he stays out of it, gives a lot of food for thought,” Hartling also said.

However, Bolt does have a record of consistently voicing his disdain for athletes who use banned substances to gain an unfair advantage.

Bolt has publicly stated that athletes who are found guilty should not escape punishment.

In fact, when the American sprinter Justin Gatlin received a meagre one year ban after testing positive for anabolic steroids in 2013, Bolt stated that he should have been ‘kicked out of the sport’ for doping, and also described the decision to reinstate him as ‘the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard’.
