Powell Claims Faulty Microphone Cost Him in 100m Race With Gatlin
On Saturday (May 28), Asafa Powell finished second in a 100m race at the Eugene Diamond League held in Oregon, USA.
American sprinter Justin Gatlin crossed the finish line just ahead of Powell in 9.88 seconds.
Hot on Powell’s heels were two other American sprinters – Tyson Gay (third – 9.98) followed by Mike Rodgers in 4th with a time of 9.99 seconds.
Now Powell is claiming he could not hear the stater’s gun. Both Gay and Rodgers had the same complaint.
Following the race, the panting sub 10 king stated:
“The mic wasn’t working, so yuh nuh…..that threw me off big time. I thought the starter would have stopped the race, but that’s how it goes,”
“I’m very disappointed because I am in good shape and I’m ready to run fast, so I’m very sad that they made Justin (Gatlin) get such a big jump, and he was too far for me to catch him,” added Powell, who joked about what he’d take from his performance here.
“I’m very pleased….. I was ran back very well. That’s a good thing for me, but I’m very disappointed with what happened at the start. What I’d take from this? I would have taken away the starter’s gun and the microphone,” he somewhat jokingly stated.
