Leicester City skipper breaks duck with winner for table-toppers
Wes Morgan, the Jamaican defender who tasted a hefty World Cup defeat in midweek, was the hero for English Premiership side Leicester City on Sunday.
The burly 32-year-old’s first goal of the season steered table-topping Leicester to their fourth 1-0 Premiership victory on the bounce. The win gave the Foxes a seven-point cushion over second-placed Tottenham, who were held to a 1-1 draw at Liverpool on Saturday afternoon.
And Morgan, who only arrived back for training following the 3-0 reversal against Costa Rica that dented Jamaica’s World Cup dreams, clawed his way back from ill health to grab the glory for Leicester.
The British-born centre-back guided Christian Fuchs’ 38th-minute cracker of a cross past England keeper Fraser Forster, which proved to be the decisive strike.
Morgan first captained the Reggae Boyz in 2014, a year after making his international debut when Jamaica kept a clean sheet in Panama, and has been touted as a future permanent skipper.
He has been an ever present for the Foxes, having not missed a single minute in their remarkable Premiership campaign.
Morgan admitted after netting the winner: “I was quite ill yesterday but I wanted to play.
“And I’ve been getting a lot of stick off the lads because I haven’t scored all season, so it’s great to shut them all up!”
Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri admitted that Morgan was very tired following back-to-back games against Costa Rica.
He said: “Wes is fantastic and he’s strong, the cold passed through him so many times.
“He didn’t have a holiday this season. He had the national team in July (Copa America tournament) and he came back here, so I gave him some days during the season because he needed them.
“He’s a good example for everybody – when he speaks, everyone listen to him.”
And Morgan’s presence in the back four was quality as Leicester kept their fifth clean sheet in six Premiership matches, Morgan and former Chelsea star Robert Huth making 20 clearances in Sunday’s success over Southampton that helps take the Foxes closer to becoming champions.
