JLP’s Win Official

There was widespread tension and uncertainty across Jamaica following the recently held and tightly contested general election.

Preliminary results of the election saw the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) temporarily claim 33 seats to the People’s National Party’s (PNP) 30.

The uncertainty largely stemmed from the announcement that the PNP had regained the St Mary South East constituency following an official recount by the Electoral Commission of Jamaica (EOJ).

That recount resulted in the JLP holding a slender one seat margin – 32 to the PNP’s 31.

As persons across the island waited for the ballots of one remaining constituency (St Thomas Western) to be counted yesterday, speculations mounted over the possibility of the PNP regaining control of the government.

According to Loop Jamaica, the EOJ has now confirmed that the JLP will form the next government following a marathon, official count of the West St Thomas ballots.

The JLP was confirmed the winner after James Robertson walked away with the majority votes, beating his PNP rival Marsha Francis-Johnson. Robertson won by more than 360 votes.

The final count remained 32 for the JLP and 31 for the PNP.
