Jamaicans Not Pleased With Proposed Toll Rates For North-South Leg of Highway 2000

On Wednesday The Jamaican Blogs™ began receiving feedback from persons regarding the newly proposed toll rates for the North-South link of Highway  2000.

We included a POLL in an article titled Are the Proposed Toll Rates For the North-South Leg of Highway 2000 Too High?

After receiving hundreds of comments and votes via our poll, it is overwhelmingly clear that many Jamaicans view the proposed rates as exorbitant.

Some have even pledged to continue using longer routes if the rates take effect.

At the time of publishing this article, 548 persons have voted via our poll and of those who voted, 523 believe the rates are “Definitely Too High” while only 25 voted for the rates being “Reasonable“.

The 523 votes represent 95 percent of the total votes.

Many persons chimed in via social media to share their views:

See some comments below:

“They are outrageously high…ppl need to stop equate our toll rates with what obtains in other countries like the United States etc. To begin with our ppl aren’t paid at the same rate as our american or canadian counterparts in any profession if you ask me. So its a ridiculous anology to substantiate it. Absolutely horrendous! If those rates are allowed to stand i wont be using that road period, i will just resort to the old route. I will put up with it. Jamaicans need to learn how to abort things else these ppl would think twice b4 they set those absurd rates.”

“Well, it’s called a toll. It’s going to take a toll on our meagre resources. That’s what we were not tolled from the get go”

“Yes it’s too high, why build it an have no one use it, doesn’t make sense to mee, it’s will cost a person leaving from Montego Bay $6,000 for gas, $1,200 one way for toll plus it’s two toll they would have to pay, Soh to Kingston an back to mobay it will atleast $9,000, if it’s someone that don’t travel one that road a lot they probly would not mind, but I would think the purpose is to have the road use as much as possible.”

“There is no way on gods earth i will pay thay amount of money to traverse to Ocho Rios and back. I am already suffering from the reels of austerity and whilst i would love to have some ease, convenience and comfort in my travels it would appear that it is not affordable. How can someone pay 7400 on a round trip to the north coast, that is mad. If it is even out of protest i will not traverse it.”

“Yes even the current ones been used are too high. From Manchester to Kingston you have to go through 3 tolls all at different cost for the same vehicle.”

“More than too high. Even if I take the old road, it will not cost that much in petrol. I will stick to the old road and plan my time of travel”
