JLP Leader Reportedly Threatens Peter Phillips With Lawsuit
Finance Minister Dr. Peter Phillips is now reportedly facing the threat of a multi-million dollar lawsuit from Opposition Leader Andrew Holness.
According to a report by Nationwide News, Mr Holness wrote to the Finance Minister about statements he made recently relating to the source of funding for his house in Beverly Hills, St. Andrew.
In the letter Mr Holness’ attorney, George Soutar reportedly told Dr. Phillips that on February 12 this year he caused statements to be published in the Jamaica Gleaner newspaper in relation to Andrew Holness’ house.
The attorney also reportedly told Dr. Phillips that the statements have defamed Mr. Holness.
Mr. Soutar reportedly told the Finance Minister that statements he has made concerning the acquisition of the land and the building of the house, should be retracted.
Dr. Phillips has reportedly been given until Friday to agree to apologize.
Holness is also reportedly demanding that the Finance Minister agree to pay over money to a charity chosen by the Opposition Leader.
Mr. Holness’ attorney says the payment to the charity will be treated as compensation for damaging comments made by Dr. Phillips.
Dr. Phillips has also reportedly been advised by Holness’ attorney that he will face a lawsuit if the apology is not published prominently by Friday.
